Aviemore is one of the main Scottish ski centres, with downhill, mountain and cross-country skiing all available, weather permitting! The closed railway line to Grantown and beyond branched off here, and has been partially resurrected as the Strathspey Steam Railway. Between Aviemore and the Cairngorms is the Rothiemurchus forest, one of the remaining fragments of the Caledonian Forest which originally covered most of the Highlands. In recent years the deer have been heavily culled, and as a result the forest is once more regenerating naturally. This is where to come if you want to see Reindeer or Ospreys. Aviemore is some 2 hours drive away from 'Nevis View'. |
