The River Spean joins the Lochy at the Bridge of Mucomir on the B8004. Many years ago there were some falls there, but a hydro-electric scheme has since more or less eradicated them. The Spean extends some 40km (25 miles) eastwards, about ¾ the way to Newtonmore.
Loch Laggan is a natural feature, but it's level has been raised as part of the hydro-electric scheme for the aluminium smelter at Fort William. After prolonged rain it can be a spectacular sight when excess water is being run out through the pipes in the dam wall. Sometimes the plume of spray is visible from several miles around. There is a small car park beside the dam, with a bronze relief map of the visible hills. Driving to the dam takes about 40 minutes. |
