Glen Shiel has for many years been the traditional 'Road to the Isle'. However, the original route was diverted when the level of Loch Clunie was raised for a hydro-electric scheme. The old road left the new one about 4km past the outlet of Loch Garry and rejoined the modern route at the Clunie Inn. The ferry at Kyle of Lochalsh is no more, having been replaced by a bridge, but it is still possible to visit Skye by boat if you use the ferries at Mallaig or Kyle Rhea (the original crossing). These ferries only take vehicles in the summer. This opens a delightful circular drive via Mallaig, onto the Skye, and back via the bridge and Glen Shiel. Driving to the Bridge of Shiel takes about 1½ hours. |
