Around the Polldubh Crags |

This is a short but steep little walk, which also has potential problems finding one's way back down to the road (The view from across the Glen makes this abundantly clear) so it should be treated with caution. I have been to the top of the crags a couple of times, once with a friend in spring and again on my own in autumn. To get there we simply crossed a stile on the north side of the road just by the Falls, and headed up steeply following the ridge line until we came to a flat shoulder - the elevation is about 430m. Lots of variation is possible, and the small crags can be bypassed or used for sport. There are some small ponds on this shoulder, and on the spring trip they contained frogsspawn and tadpoles. To the south Sgurr a'Mhaim towers over this spot, and there is also an excellent view of Stob Ban and up the Allt Coire a' Mhusgain. Eastward the Glen Nevis gorge is seen, with a distant backdrop. This is also a place where eagles might be seen. The sting of this walk is in the descent - great care must be taken and the safest route is to contour eastward (dropping slightly) to grid ref. 160 692 - at this point the 350m contour cuts the easting. This takes you to the east of the worst of the crags, and it's possible to zig-zag down steeper ground and then head back to the road. |
