The Old Military Road |

The road we use these days to drive through Glencoe doesn't follow the line of the old Military Road except in a few places. As a result the old road can be used for gentle walks without the danger of traffic. The first western-most section is south of the modern road and starts near the farm buildings at Achtriochan (GR 159571). It continues for a couple of kilometres rejoining the modern road at Allt-na-reigh. The second section is more substantial though shorter and starts a little further east (GR 179565). It winds over The Study and gives splendid views of the Three Sisters. You may find you recognise this view - it has been used in a fair number of adverts! The next section starts a couple of hundred meters further on (GR 197564) and goes most of the way to Altnafeadh, and finally just after Altnafeadh are sections which could be followed all the way to Bridge of Orchy! This final long section lies north of the modern road and joins the track to Black Corries Lodge for a kilometre, before turning south towards the Kingshouse Hotel - yet another of the places Bonnie Prince Charles is rumoured to have stayed. It carries on across the modern road where it forms part of the access to the Glencoe ski area, but leaves at Black Rock Cottage. It then skirts around the foot of the Blackmount before eventually emerging at Victoria Bridge to follow the stump of the old road to Bridge of Orchy. This section is wild and remote, and the ground between it and the main road is full of bogs and lochans. |
