Sir Hugh Munro first published his Tables of Scottish 3000-ft mountains in 1891. Previously there was very little idea of how many mountains there were of this size - some thought there were as few as 30. The Scottish Mountaineering Club (SMC) set out to establish a list, and felt that Sir Hugh was the right man for the job. Sir Hugh died in 1919, when he was working on a revision of the Tables. The SMC have continued to revise the Tables from time to time, the last being in 1997. Reasons for the revisions have included more accurate measurements of the heights becoming available, and the constant discussion about what is the difference between a Separate Mountain (Munro) and a Top. Sir Hugh never completed the Munros himself. The first to do so was the Rev. A.E. Robertson, in 1901. Since then there has been an increasing number of Compleaters (sic), and some have more than one round to their name! | |||||||||||
